Excerpt from Vancouver Magazine Article...

Luxury Car Sharing
Turns out car sharing isn’t just for students needing a ride to Ikea. For an upfront $9,000-$25,000, the Vancouver Car Club offers a one-tenth stake in the Ferrari, Aston Martin, or Lamborghini of your dreams. And like those other car shares, your monthly fee covers storage, maintenance, and insurance (although gas is on you). One share buys four weeks per year driving time and gives you a say in which rides the club gets its hands on next.

Richmond’s Empire One  offers members access to its entire fleet of luxury cars; for an “initiation” fee ($2,995-$7,500) as well as annual dues ($16,445-$32,995) members can book any car, any time, for up to seven days straight. They’ll also pick you up, drop you off, and take care of your primary car while you’re zipping around in theirs, but gas is again on you.

How do I rent a Ferrari?

Science: the stuff of legends like Bill Nye and that guy with the funny hair. But you are no slouch yourself – apparent given your hypothesis that two parts LL Cool J and one part jet black Ferrari will produce many different parts in your bedroom at the same time.

Helping you get closer to achieving legend status, our first instalment of “How Do I?”.  This week,we ask:

“How do I go about renting a Ferrari in Vancouver?”

In Vancouver, trying to find a Ferrari for hire might be a bigger impediment than the cost itself, since your typical rental car company isn’t financially able to rent them out. When you factor in the cost of buying a new Ferrari vs. the amount of times they would be able to rent one out, the rental companies would end losing too much money. Additionally, Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver, the only factory authorized Ferrari and Maserati dealer in B.C., doesn’t rent out any of their inventory.

So, if the two most obvious places to lend a Ferrari in Vancouver won’t rent you one, where do you go?

Vancouver Car ClubYour best bet is to contact the Vancouver Car Club. They offer up two different Ferraris: The 360 Spider and F430. Here’s how the cost breaks down for both:

360 SpiderF430Rental Cost$950/day$1250/dayType of RentalWeekend RentalWeekend RentalMileage CostsFirst 100km included; $2 a km after thatFirst 100km included; $2 a km after thatYou’re looking at a decent amount of money, but the mileage, compared to others (see below), is pretty reasonable. Also, of all the dealers we talked to, VCC was the only one that preferred to do a weekend rental.

Let’s take a look at Option #2.

Renting from a Private DealerOne of the car brokers we spoke to mentioned that he used to have a client that would rent out his Bentley, worth over $150,000, for $4,000 a month, plus mileage. The $4,000 on the surface seems reasonable-ish for a full month, but it’s the mileage and insurance that might do you in. Mileage was clocked at $10 a km while you had to pay for your own insurance.

Given that these numbers would be comparable to a Ferrari, let’s do some math:

If you wanted to drive from English Bay to Kits Beach, a 4.3 km trip, it would end up costing you over $40.00 if you just factored in the mileage. It’s an 8-minute drive.

Let’s be honest, however, this would do wonders for your beach game so it could easily be $40 worth spending.

The cost that could break the camel’s backWe’ve gone over all the costs you’ll incur, however there’s one sneaky charge that might end up burning a whole in your pocket: Tire Depth.

Often times when people rent high-end cars, they love to rip around the city (who wouldn’t?). However, since tires are expensive, you might run into a rental company that charges you for the tire depth. Always ask about this particular cost before you get into bed with a Ferrari.  In fact, you should probably always ask about the cost before you get into bed with anything with an Italian name – after all, bunga bunga parties always come with a bigger bill than expected.

There you have it! We’ve learned where and how to rent a Ferrari in Vancouver, while also learning the true meaning of this classic album.

Until our next “How Do I?” instalment, stay classy Vancouver!
